Anxiety, a prevalent issue faced by many people these days (myself included), can manifest in a variety of physical and emotional symptoms. For those seeking natural, holistic approaches to ease their anxiety, aromatherapy can be a powerful ally. It's a centuries-old practice that harnesses the power of essential oils extracted from plants, promoting health and well-being, and can be very effective at helping to soothe anxiety.
Here's how it works.
Understanding Aromatherapy
At its core, aromatherapy uses essential oils—highly concentrated plant extracts—to promote relaxation and alleviate physical and emotional stress. These oils can be inhaled directly, diffused in a room, or applied to the skin during a massage, depending on the type of oil and the desired outcome.
Essential Oils for Anxiety
Numerous essential oils are renowned for their calming and soothing properties. Here are a few commonly used for anxiety relief:
1. Lavender: A superstar in the world of aromatherapy, lavender oil is well-known for its calming effects. Studies show that it can reduce anxiety levels, improve sleep, and even lessen feelings of restlessness and agitation. I use this one a lot!
2. Chamomile: Just as a cup of chamomile tea can soothe the mind, inhaling chamomile essential oil can have similar calming effects. It can aid in reducing anxiety and initiating a peaceful state of mind. It is also fabulous at aiding a restful sleep.
3. Bergamot: Often called “Sunshine in a bottle”; extracted from the peel of the bergamot orange, this oil is often used in perfumery for its citrusy scent. Research indicates that bergamot essential oil can decrease heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels (the stress hormone), thus alleviating anxiety symptoms.
4. Ylang Ylang: This oil has a unique floral scent and has been used traditionally for relaxation and mood enhancement. Ylang Ylang can help reduce heart rate and blood pressure, promoting a calm and peaceful state of mind. It has a great sedative effect.
Using Essential Oils Safely
Safety is paramount when using essential oils. Most oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (like almond, jojoba, or coconut oil) before applying to the skin to avoid irritation. Generally speaking, the safest way to use aromatherapy oils is to inhale the aromas, rather than use them on the skin at all. Either a drop or two on a tissue, or use an oil burner, or cold steam diffuser to allow the scent to fill the room you are in. Also, remember that not all oils are safe for ingestion or suitable for pregnant women, children, or pets.
The Takeaway
While aromatherapy can provide a valuable tool in your anxiety management toolbox, remember that it's not a cure-all. A balanced lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and positive social interactions, along with professional help when needed, is vital for overall mental health. However, the calming scents of aromatherapy oils can certainly offer a soothing balm for those anxious moments, and to aid in restful sleep.
